Vehicle types, anatomies and terminology are reviewed, including the main motivations and objectives for vehicle suspension design in both passenger and freight applications. The fundamentals of dynamic vehicle response are reviewed, providing a framework in which to understand the types of modes that can be excited in service and the means by which suspension elements act to balance the range of requirements including vehicle steering in curves, stability in tangent track, ride comfort in passenger applications, etc.
