This presentation gives an overview of typical rail and wheel steel metallurgies and microstructures. It will be explained why and how these properties influence material characteristics and general behaviour of these steels. Based on these explanations, the typical damage forms of rail and wheel steels will be analyzed to highlight why damage is forming on the rail/wheel surface and what measures can be taken to mitigate the effects of rail/wheel damage.
