Biography: Eric Magel is a Principal Engineer with the Automotive and Surface Transportation program at the National Research Council of Canada but is currently serving as the Acting Manager of R&D with ENSCO at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado.

After receiving his Master’s degree in Engineering (specializing in Tribology) from the University of British Columbia in Canada in 1990 he joined Ontario Hydro Research in Toronto to study the wear of nuclear steam generator tubes. He subsequently moved to the NRC and for nearly 30 years has worked with freight, commuter and transit railroads. A specialist in the vehicle/track interaction, he researches and consults on problems of wear, fatigue, corrugation, noise, ride quality and derailment on heavy haul, passenger and light rail systems.

He has consulted on various wheel/rail problems for nearly 30 passenger and freight-systems on every continent except Antarctica. His current work is focused on wheel-rail performance, rail grinding and noise on transit systems, along with studies in transportation related climate change and environmental issues. He is also leading the International Collaborative Research Initiative on Rolling Contact Fatigue and Wear
(icri-rcf.org).
